RCI Shares Peculiar Fact about Valentine’s Day Vacationers

Valentine’s Day is a time to spend with your loved ones… but would you spend it with the entire family? RCI recently reported that thousands of people are searching for vacations during the week of Valentine’s Day, but not the romantic retreat that you would expect.
Statistics from RCI’s member database show that this year more than 750,000 people searched for bookings during Valentine’s Day week. Surprisingly, the overwhelming majority of searches were for units with multiple bedrooms.
Most travel experts would expect that reservation during the week of Valentine’s Day would be for romantic getaways. Usually those who travel as a couple would only need a studio or one bedroom unit. However, RCI found that only 4.6% of V-day travelers were searching for this type of unit. The majority of people, about 75%, searched for two-bedrooms or more.
In spite of the romantic holiday, it seems that travelers are choosing to spend this time with family and friends. This includes the “furry” members of the family as well. The request for pet-friendly resorts has tripled since last year, and currently accounts for about 8% of searches.
As for the type of vacation members searched for, many chose to look for activity-based vacations. Given the time of year, ski-timeshares were the most popular search, with over 67% of travelers searching for this type of trip. It’s no surprise that beach vacations came in second. In fact, 1 in 5 people were looking for a beach trip.
RCI also looked at the numbers for travel destinations. The most popular regions for Valentine’s Day searches were Riveria Maya and Playa del Carmen in Mexico. These regions accounted for 13.4% of all holiday searches. Orlando, Florida followed in second place with 11.6% of all searches. Popular searches also included: Tenerife, Spain; Cancun, Mexico; and Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
