Marriott International to Open Over 100,000 Rooms in Europe

As the impending merger with Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide comes to a close in mid-2016, Marriott International has announced that its number of rooms will double in size throughout Europe. The company will offer more than 123,000 opened or signed rooms—the sum of Marriott’s 61,000 open rooms, Starwood’s 40,500 open rooms, and the joint ownership of 21,500 rooms.

Marriott will be absorbing Starwood’s luxury brands Luxury Collection, St. Regis, and W Hotels into their own roster of luxury brands, which includes the Ritz-Carlton, JW Marriott, and EDITION. Combined with the company’s economy and mid-tier resorts like Moxy Hotels, Courtyard Hotels, and AC Hotels, Marriott will offer 22 locations around Europe with units spanning from economy to luxury.

“It’s been an extraordinary time for Marriott. We signed over 10,000 new rooms in 2015 for the first time in our history, doubling in size since 2010. Added to this unprecedented growth was the announcement of our Starwood acquisition which is expected to close in mid-2016,” said Amy McPherson, president and managing director of Marriott International, Europe. “Our momentum is incredible.”

Marriott will be opening locations all over Europe, with over 70 percent opening in the Central and Eastern regions. Four hotels will open in Germany in 2016 as part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, a collection of independent hotels and the industry’s fastest growing full-service brand. AC Hotels, the urban European design hotel brand, will launch 22 hotels around the world and open UK locations for the first time in Manchester and Birmingham in May. Moxy Hotels is projected to see the biggest growth with five new hotels opening by the end of 2016 and at least nine hotels opening by the end of 2017.

Marriott Hotels will be opening five new properties in Germany, Belarus, Macedonia, and Russia, while three new Moxy Hotels and an AC Hotel will be opened in Germany. Marriott Hotels opened two new locations in the Netherlands earlier this year, with one AC Hotels opening in Marseille. The Renaissance Paris Republique Hotel located in the Canal Saint Martin district will also open its doors in April.

Major renovations are being done to the London Marriott Hotel County Hall and Grosvenor House—two of Marriott’s most iconic hotels based in London—and are projected to be completed by spring. Moxy Hotels is also expected to open a location in Aberdeen, its first UK-based location. With all of these openings, Marriott’s total European development will see over 4,400 rooms opening over the entire continent.
