Wyndham Destinations Announces Sustainability Initiative to Eliminate Single-Use Plastic From Its Club Resorts

In honor of International Coastal Cleanup Day on September 21 and to support the company’s environmental sustainability efforts, Wyndham Destinations has just announced its decision to eliminate plastic straws and other single-use plastic from its food and beverage operations at its vacation club resorts starting October 1, 2019.

This decision will eliminate more than 750,000 single-use plastic straws in North America and over 1.1 million around the world. The company follows the lead of Wyndham’s Asia Pacific division removing disposable straws from 22 of its managed resorts this past year.

Wyndham Vacation Clubs’ COO Geoff Richards was happy to discuss this latest development:

“The switch to biodegradable or paper straws is a small, but impactful change we can make for our environment, and aligns with our company’s efforts to support sustainable tourism. By engaging and empowering both our associates and customers to understand sustainability-based best practices, we are cultivating a culture that prioritizes minimizing our environmental footprint and raising the health of our people and our communities.”

In addition to removing plastic straws, Wyndham has also developed a plan to eliminate plastic cups and lids, plastic cutlery, styrofoam to-go boxes, and plastic bags across managed resort locations. Adding these additional items to their initiative will stop the use of over 4.8 million single-use products by the end of 2020.

To celebrate International Coastal Cleanup Day even further, Wyndham will host cleanup events and opportunities at many coastal resort locations for guests and employees to participate in.

The sustainability efforts don’t stop there. Wyndham produced its first Social Responsibility Report this year which included an environmental sustainability policy. This policy reiterates Wyndham’s commitment to reducing its environmental impacts related to its operations and chain supply. The company is also enrolled in a national program that highlights environmental education, reporting for recycling, and landfill diversion.
