Hawaii Timeshare Units Safe, but Closing the Iliaki Hotel Feels Like the End of an Era

“Book ’em, Danno.” If you don’t remember anything else about the TV show, “Hawaii Five-O,” you probably remember this command issued at the end of almost every episode by McGarrett (actor Jack Lord) to the young police officer, Danny Williams (actor James MacArthur).

The popular police drama aired from 1968 to 1980 and helped bring the allure of the Hawaiian Islands into millions of American homes on a weekly basis. At the time the show began, Hawaii was still a recent addition to the US, having held statehood less than 10 years. Many fans of the show followed it as much for the scenic views and flavor of the islands as for the storyline and characters.

Most episodes of Hawaii Five-O were shot in Honolulu and other locations on the island of Oahu, and every week, the opening credits included images of the skyline along Waikiki Beach and a pensive McGarrett standing on the balcony of the penthouse suite at the Ilikai Hotel. This week, the Ilikai Hotel announced its closing, shutting down some 200 hotel rooms. Within the resort complex are approximately 800 more timeshare units and private condos which will remain open.
