Summer Bay Security Officer Honored on Daytime TV
Tuesday, November 5, 2013
A Security Officer at the Sumer Bay Resort in Orlando, FL was honored on a recent episode of the Steve Harvey show.
Richard Shanley was working at Summer Bay Orlando when a sinkhole, previously mentioned on The Timeshare Authority, formed on the grounds of the resort on the night of August 11th, 2013. Shanley evacuated and rescued a total of 105 guests from a dangerous building, which later collapsed into the sinkhole. Steve Harvey chose to honor Shanley as one of “Harvey’s Heroes” on the season two premier of his daytime talk show.
Shanley says, “I’m just an ordinary run-of-the-mill guy, doing my job. I needed to take care of my guests.”
He may feel that he was “just doing his job”, but many would say this was an extraordinary act for someone who had worked at the Orlando timeshare resort for only 2 months prior to the event.
During the “Harvey’s Heroes” episode, Steve Harvey presented Shanley with a dream Caribbean vacation, all expenses paid. Richard also received a custom jacket, embellished with both his name and “Harvey’s Hero”. Harvey proclaimed, “You are a real hero. It’s amazing what you did.”
President and CEO of Summer Bay Resorts, Paul Caldwell stated “We are extremely proud of Richard and his act of heroism. He exemplifies our commitment to our owners and guests.”
