Wyndham Vacation Rentals Surveys Black Friday Shoppers

Wyndham Vacation Rentals ® recently conducted a survey through Harris Interactive to poll the Millennial Generation (Americans ages 18-34) on their shopping habits. The study focused on holiday shopping trends and Black Friday shopping in particular.

The study showed the 89% of Millennials will shop on Black Friday this year, and that 39% of Americans would gladly spend more money, if they received a travel discount in return.

Wyndham also found that shoppers are willing to awake up early to save more money. Compared to ages 35 and above, Millenials are four timeshare more likely to begin their shopping at midnight to line up for the best deals.

They also showed more aggression to compete with other Black Friday shoppers. When offered a scenario in which the participant and another shopper both reached for an item at the same time, 28% said that they would take the item and run. Only 18% of adults ages 35-64 and 8% of adults over 65 provided this competitive answer. Researchers also saw increased competition amongst Millenials who were veteran Black Friday shoppers. In fact, these participants were twice as likely to have a disagreement with another shopper.

Wyndham discovered that most of these shoppers are organized, and plan to use the money they save on Black Friday on family and friends. In fact, 58% of Millenials said that they would spend more money on gifts if they could save on planned Black Friday purchases. In addition, 67% shared that they would consider using some of the money saved towards purchasing travel arrangements.

President of Wyndham Vacation Rentals North America, Bob Milne said, “Black Friday is growing to encompass deals on all different types of gifts to accommodate the new shopper. Gifting is becoming as much about memorable, shared experiences as it is about the tangible product. Our survey found that 41 percent of Americans have purchased travel as a gift for the holidays in the past, with 49 percent of Millennials going that route. As more and more companies begin offering Black Friday deals, regardless of whether or not their product can be shelved in the traditional sense, this time-honored shopping holiday will continue to evolve.”
