After 57 years, family-owned Welk Hospitality Group has agreed to an approximated $430-million acquisition offer from Marriott Vacations Worldwide (MVW.) This offer includes the sale of Welk Resorts’ portfolio of resort properties, vacation ownership programs, and property management contracts, as well as 1.4 million Marriott Vacations Worldwide shares. Marriott Vacation Worldwide announced that they have made the difficult decision based on the increasing travel and business operating restrictions due to COVID-19 to close all North America vacation ownership resorts for the next 30 days as of today. Additionally, Marriott has closed all North American sales centers for two weeks, effective March 23, 2020.

Marriott Vacations Worldwide has just announced its plan to bring a new vacation ownership property to Waikiki. In their proposal, the company outlines a seven-story building on Honolulu’s south shore which will feature a mix of around 110 studio and one-bedroom accommodations and two floors of retail space. Amenities for the resort will include a pool, a fitness center, a bar, and a 10,000-square-foot on-site sales gallery. [Read more…]
